About the Project

The Alero Project is an artist residency inspired by the beautiful gardens and terrain of Barichara, Colombia. The project is in partnership with the Taller de Papel de Barichara; a collective of women who make special handmade paper, using fibers extracted from plants such as fique and pineapple.

Usually, Shara Mays makes very large paintings on canvas. She embarked on this project to offer small works on paper at more accessible prices. For this project, Shara Mays is painting ten original paintings on special handmade paper in ten days.

About the Taller de Papel

The Taller de Papel de Barichara was established in 2001 with the aim of bringing together the community of Barichara and its surrounding areas, uniting their diverse knowledge, exploring local materials, and honoring Santander traditions and knowledge through the lens of botany and art.
